I bought two TW's about 1 1/2 years ago along with 2 extra probes for use exclusively in my smokers. Have been exremely happy with their performance. Yeah, I've had the probes fail, but keep in mind they are the weakest point on ANY temp monitoring device, and I knew that going in. In hindsight, the probe failures I've had have been my fault, either due to using in rain and snow, or allowing the cables to get kinked/pinched where they enter the smoker. I've used other temp monitors, but for the price, the TW's are the best out there. The replacement probe cost is also one of the least expensive I've seen. I consider replacement probe costs part of routine maintenance. Between the TW monitor and my older, "not so superfast" Thermopen, I'm able to produce some pretty darn good Que. Actually planning on getting 2 more so I can also keep an eye on the cooking chamber temps as well as meat temps. I would love to see TW offer either a remote monitor or bluetooth type capability so temps can be monitored from the comfort of my recliner, especially for those long pork butt or brisket cooks.

Last Thanksgiving, I thought I was all set to reheat my spiral sliced (precooked) ham in my Wolf duel fuel oven which has an oven probe. But I soon discovered that the probe only goes down to 160ºF (Cooks Illustrated and ThermoWorks recommends heating the ham to an internal temperature of 140º). I had to watch the probe temperature instead of conveniently setting the temperature I wanted and cooking the rest of the meal while I waited for an alarm to sound. So I ordered this ThermoWorks Cooking Thermometer and Timer that night and got it the Monday after Thanksgiving! This thermometer goes down to 32ºF and up to 392ºF (0ºC to 200ºC). The thermometer and timer controls are very intuitive to use. The nice thing about this thermometer is that I can leave the probe in the meat as it rests and watch the internal temperature. But the thermometer alarm only monitors the temperature while things are heating up: I can't set it to watch the temperature as the temperature of something cools.

The thermometer/timer has two magnets on the back so you can stick it on a metal surface (if it will take a magnet). But the thermometer/timer can also be placed on the counter and the display viewing angle adjusted. There is a slide switch on the back to change the display from ºC to ºF and the display changes even with the thermometer turned on. And it only uses one AAA size battery (it seems happy with my rechargeable Sanyo Eneloop). The timer goes up to 23 hours and 59 minutes. I like that the controls are not slow when I set the temperature or timer, something I've seen with my other timers. You know, you mash a button and the timer takes a long time to count up to the time you want.

I got the improved model (B) versus the A version that Cooks Illustrated tested. Among the improvements is a heat and water proof plastic sleeve that covers the wire as it enters the probe to help keep water out of the probe. It is important to keep water out of the probe when cleaning otherwise it will short out the probe. I ordered a Replacement Probe for TW362B Oven Thermometer along with my cooking thermometer and it was not the improved version (no plastic sleeve). The probe wire is about 45" long so it seems long enough so far for me to place the thermometer in a convenient place on my counter while the probe is in the oven.

The Thermometer and Timer is made in China.

PS: This is from the thermoworks.com web site about the probe:

Probe cables will withstand 500 F for short term use to allow for oven browning (so the probe can be put into a oven that is hotter than what the thermometer can read). The probe itself is rated to 392 F. The probe cable employs high temperature wires insulated with PTFE and protected by a stainless steel overbraid. The cable diameter is small to allow it to be closed in an oven door without creating a heat leak. The probe assembly is not completely waterproof and SHOULD NOT BE IMMERSED IN WATER. The tip of the probe tube can be run under a tap or cleaned with a damp rag. (Keep the cable dry.) Keep the probe cable away from heating elements, flames, coals, grill or oven racks - all of which can reach temperature far higher than 500 F. (There are no food-safe, affordable wire technologies that will withstand higher temperatures.) Avoid repeated kinking or twisting the probe cable which can break wires over time.

    PROS:

    It is inexpensive and accurate.
Gives you both a thermometer and timer for your cooking needs.
Pretty good range of cooking and food prep temperatures.
    The controls are intuitive.
It only needs one easy to buy AAA size battery.

    CONS:

I would be nice if I could set the thermometer alarm to watch the temperature as something is cooling.

I really am quite careful with my kitchen equipment so when this unit stopped working after a couple of uses, I assumed I had a defective unit, I returned it for another one. This one too died after a few uses. I read more about it on line, bought new one, and an extra probe because the manufacturer suggested it. I treated it with the most tender kid gloves and again I found after only two or three uses, it did not work. So I have given up, it is going to the electronic recycling. My last probe broke after one use. I am posting this only to help others not waste money!

    Then I heard from ThermoWorks!

After posting the review above, I received an email, followed by a phone call from the company. The person who contacted me was very sincere and seemed to really believe in his product and wanted to help me figure out what I was doing to cause it to fail. He offered me a new unit for free if I would give it another try. I said no, I didn't have time to be testing it.
But he asked me some questions about how I used it and suggested what might be the problem. It seems that you have to be careful not to let the wire from the probe to the unit touch the oven rack or the roasting pan. He asked me if I had been careful to keep the wire taught to avoid this contact. I had to admit I had not, I do not remember this being part of the written instructions that came with the unit I bought, because as I said in my original post, I read and follow instructions carefully. (I wonder if such instructions now come with the unit!)

So I agreed to try again and he quickly sent me another unit with an extra probe. It was months before I finally tested it. I kept expecting a phone call to ask if I had tried it (and to ask me to revise my criticism of it) but I never heard from the company again, which really impressed me.

I have used it, about five times now, and following the new precautions about the wire, I have been successful. I still double check the temp with a second thermometer because I'm still nervous from all my previous raw roasts, but the unit does work as stated.
I have changed my rating to 4 stars. I can't give 5 since it is too touchy and it is expensive to replace the probe. But I would give the company 5 stars for their honest concern about their product and customer satisfaction.

I read all of the reviews and liked what I saw, so I purchased this ThermoWorks rather than competing models. Over and over people wrote about how flaky the probe was, but I thought, "hey, I read dirctions and I'm very careful, it won't happen to me."

    But it did.

I did not get it wet. I did not place it or the wire on a heating element. I DID use it in an oven over 392 degrees. The instructions don't tell you that it will break if you use it in an oven over 392 degrees. This is what broke my probe.

The reading on the temp screen read: "HI." The reading never went away. I called the Amazon seller (Handy House) and spoke with lady who was fantastic, and confirmed that other folks have had similar issues with the probe. She graciously contacted the owner of the company on my behalf to advocate for me to try to have them send me a free replacement. I'll find out within the week, I hope, but I intend to buy extra probes just in case.

So A+ to Handy House for their low price and excellent customer service. A grade of "C" for the ThermoWorks for being so gentile. I will write, however, that the layout and functionality of the device are outstanding.

I DO suggest getting this ThermoWorks, just make sure to get at least one extra probe, even if you think you are super careful and won't break the probe, you probably will.
